Mosquito dunks are a specialized product designed to prevent the growth and proliferation of mosquito larvae in various water sources, such as fountains, animal troughs, and fish ponds. They contain a beneficial bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti), which specifically targets and eliminates the larvae of flying insects like mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and fruit flies.

The use of mosquito dunks is not limited to just preventing mosquito larvae in standing water.  Mosquito dunks provide a safe and effective alternative to traditional toxic chemicals, without causing harm to people, pets, wildlife, or fish. These dunks have been trusted by professionals for years and are made with a highly specific biological pesticide called Bt-israelensis (Bt-i), which is a significant breakthrough.

If you observe small black flies emerging from your soil, it may indicate the presence of fungus gnats, which are indoor houseplant pests. Fungus gnats are attracted to the moisture of potting soil and lay their eggs near the soil surface. After a few days, the eggs hatch into larvae that feed on fungi and decaying plant material. If the population of fungus gnats grows rapidly, their larvae can start damaging plant roots. Mosquito dunks can also effectively eliminate fungus gnat larvae. To use them, soak a dunk in water overnight, then remove it and water your plants with the infused water. The dunk can be reused, and the bacteria in it will infect and kill any larvae present in the soil. Repeat this process each time you water your plants for a few months to ensure complete eradication.

Some individuals have reported success in using mosquito dunks to control thrips. The active ingredient in mosquito dunks, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), produces toxins that are lethal to mosquito larvae but harmless to other organisms. Thrips, like mosquitoes, have aquatic larvae, and certain growers have found mosquito dunks effective in controlling thrips in their crops by incorporating them into their irrigation systems.

It's worth mentioning that mosquito dunks have not been specifically designed or tested for thrip control, so their effectiveness against thrips may vary depending on the thrip species and the environmental conditions in which they are used.

Combining mosquito dunks with beneficial nematodes, can be a powerful approach to pest control in gardens or indoor plant environments. Mosquito dunks contain a naturally occurring bacterium that produces a toxin lethal to mosquito larvae but harmless to other organisms, including beneficial nematodes. Beneficial nematodes actively seek out and feed on soil-dwelling pests like fungus gnats and thrips. By combining mosquito dunks with nematodes, you can effectively target pests at different stages of their life cycle and maximize the efficacy of your pest control efforts.

In addition, introducing the predatory mite Cucumeris can enhance the pest control strategy. Cucumeris is particularly effective against thrips and moderately effective against spider mites and other small insect pests. They feed on the immature stages of these pests, preventing them from developing into adults and causing further damage. Like beneficial nematodes, Cucumeris pose no harm to plants and can be used as part of an integrated pest management approach to control pest populations in gardens or indoor plant environments. When combined with mosquito dunks and beneficial nematodes, Cucumeris can provide an additional layer of protection and enhance the overall effectiveness of the pest control strategy.
